The 64th birthday of the first woman prime minister of Pakistan and the Muslim world Benazir Bhutto is being celebrated today (June 21).
Benazir as born to a known famous political party leader, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who developed her interest in politics.
Benazir, also known as ‘Mohatarma Benazir’ was married to Asif Ali Zardari in 1987 and had three children, Bilawal Bhutto, Bakhtawar Bhutto and Asifa Bhutto.
Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was an active and founding member of Council of Women World Leader. Also, Benazir successfully led the Political Party in 1988 elections.
After winning the support from the government in the National Assembly, Benazir assumed the office in December 1988. She was an economist by profession but during her terms as prime minister, she herself took the charge of Ministry of Finance. Her government was dismissed on August 7, 1990. Mohtarma also held premier’s office for the second time but assembly was dissolved again.
Death of Mohtarma
She was assassinated in Liaquat Bagh on 27 December 2007. When Benazir came out from the sunroof of her vehicle to the loud cheers of the supporters when she was gunned down. She was 53 at the time. She was laid with her other family members in Garhi Khuda Baksh, Sindh.
Meanwhile, PPP leaders paid tribute to the martyred Benazir Bhutto by their tweets. PPP lawmaker, Nafisa Shah calls her martyred leader, “an epic of struggle”.
